A family arrives at Shelby Emergency Assistance after one of the hardest weeks of their lives. Maybe someone lost a job. Maybe an unexpected medical bill left them choosing between paying rent and keeping the lights on. Maybe they're simply overwhelmed and don't know where to turn.
They don't come to us looking for a handout. They come looking for help taking the next step out of crisis.
At SEA, we believe a crisis doesn't have to define someone's future. Sometimes all a family needs is a safe place to catch their breath, find support, and begin moving forward again.
That's why we created The Harbor Society.
The Harbor Society, made up of Harbor Keepers like you, is a community of monthly supporters who believe every family deserves the opportunity to move from crisis to self-sufficiency. Monthly giving ensures that whenever a neighbor reaches out for help—tomorrow, next month, or next year—SEA is ready to respond.

A DAY AT SEA
8:00 AM
The phone rings. It's a mom who's recently lost her job. She's doing everything she can to keep life as normal as possible for her kids, but today she's calling because her power is scheduled to be disconnected. A social worker listens to her story, helps pay the bill, and connects her with the Career Center.
A homeless client waits at the door. A social worker greets them, invites them to shower and get food before making a referral for housing assistance.
10:00 AM
Volunteers arrive to stock pantry shelves, sort fresh produce, and prepare food bags. Before lunch, several families have already picked up enough groceries to feed their households for the week.
2:00 PM – A young mom stops by on her way home from work. Payday is still three days away, and she's almost out of diapers. She leaves with diapers, wipes, and period products—one less worry to carry home that evening.
11:00 - A grandmother raising her three grandchildren comes in after skipping medication to afford her other necessary bills. A case manager helps cover the cost of her prescriptions through SEA's medical assistance program.
1:00 - A family in SEA's ESG housing program sits down with the case manager for their monthly check-in. Since moving into stable housing, the father has found a job and they are rebuilding their savings. Today's meeting focuses on budgeting, childcare, and the next steps toward independence.
3:00 PM – A young mom stops by on her way home from work. Payday is still three days away, and she's almost out of diapers. She leaves with diapers, wipes, and period products—one less worry to carry home that evening.
12:00 - It's lunchtime, and SEA takes a pause. We close for an hour each day so our staff can rest, recharge, and simply be human. The work we do is meaningful, but it can also be heavy. Taking care of our team helps us take better care of our neighbors.
4:00 PM – A man walks through our doors carrying everything he owns. He needs transportation to a shelter in Birmingham, but before he leaves, he finds something else, too—a hot meal, a shower, fresh hygiene supplies, and a safe place to rest for a while
